How do I know if I need new spark plugs?

There are a few telltale signs that indicate your vehicle’s spark plugs are going bad. Some of them may be shared with other issues, but taken altogether, they usually add up to fouled plugs:

Decreased fuel economy

Decreased accleration

Hard starts/reluctant turnovers

Rough engine idling

Misfiring engine

Spark plugs don’t last forever. Depending on the manufacturer and your driving habits, they’ll last somewhere in the 100,000-mile range. Your vehicle will have the same amount of spark plugs as cylinders, but that doesn’t mean they all need to be changed at the same time. Sometimes one plug fouls and the other are perfectly fine for tens of thousands of miles after.

Note: the above symptoms only apply to spark plugs in a gasoline-powered vehicle; diesel engines use glow plugs, which are not the same thing and are not interchangeable.
